Historical background
|
| In 1965, Chagos was a british colony. At the time,
the British authorities decided to rent Diego Garcia to the Americans. The Americans established a military base and the rental agreement was made under the condition that all surrounded islands of the archipelago would be uninhabited. As a result, 3.000 Chagosians were evacuated to Mauritius. The Chagosians never really integrated themselves in Mauritius and still live in their own "quarters" today. They decided to bring their case in front a a British court and, in january 2001, 35 years after the first proceedings, they finally won. They won the right to go back to Chagos and to get compensation for having been exiled. In December 2001, the compensation was still pending. Some Chagosians would like to go back to the islands to develop both the fishing and the tourist industry but, without funds, it's impossible. They would need new homes, a hospital, an airfield, etc. In the meantime, the Chogos islands are really the true uninhabited islands in the indian ocean. |
